MARIE ANTOINETTE

The thing which strikes me the most about this film (besides the amazing fashion, the champagne and the tons of cakes and macarons which, as the French would say, "me mettent l'eau à la bouche") is the feeling of intimacy with Marie Antoinette that I get. Approaching this subject in a non-epic, non-judgmental way is not usual, although this very intimate, very sensual way of filming is typical but also exclusive from Sofia Coppola. Pastel tones, a classic elegance and a very pictural photography remind me of the frivolous paintings of Fragonnard. The film got all kinds of reviews because of its non-orthodox soundtrack and atrezzo, but I love the way this is a very Pop Marie Antoinette without ever falling on any easy clichés and with a very good historical background. The film is a true hommage to the exhuberance of Versailles and its gardens, to the french definition of luxury and to the "joie de vivre" in general. Some days ago I heard Sofia Coppola is preparing her fourth film, which will be set on the infamous Chateau Marmont Hotel in California, and will tell the story of a decadent rockstar and his daughter. A plot that would seem "banale" if it was made by any other filmmaker, but with Coppola we can all expect pop culture references, a delicate approach to emotions and aesthetics, a great soudtrack and an otherworldly light. At the very least.

I couldn't have said it better myself. This is one of my favourite films. The aesthetic value and vision in Coppola's work is incredible. Not only did it get a lot of bad reviews due to soundtrack etc.. but I feel like due to the redundancy in the film showing her opulent yet quite boring life really says something about detail to what Marie Antoinettes life was most likely like. So I love that drawn out redundancy in the film. Anyways, rant over. Just stumbled onto your blog and loved this post!

Wonderfully written post; I agree completely. I love how the film (arguably like Sofia herself) embraces frivolity, yet maintains such a strong element of substantiality.
A paradox of sorts: there is a photograph of the two leads in full Victorian garb looking intently at a MacBook Pro (presumably between takes).

Thanks for your kind words at my place (minor keys). I am so glad to find you because I absolutely love your blog; can't wait to read more!

One look at the second photo and I immediately thought, "I'd cut off the skirt and bustle and wear the top with jeans and boots." There something about the idea of reinventing romantic clothing ,yet ,keeping it's essence that I love to day dream about.

I agree with much of what you wrote in your post about Arthur Rackham. My mother and I are both artists and we long for the days when illustrations in childrens' books weren't lifeless. When I see those classic drawings that dreamy part of me who wants to be somebody's princess is awakened. Thank you for the post.

I loved/hated this movie I loved the way it was directed. However I also read the Biography that this movie was strongly based off of. What frustrated me was the movie was very loyal to the bio in some parts, but wildly off base in others. I have read 3 different biographies on Marie Antoinette...she still seems such a mystery.
